The Importance of Wash Consistency

The consistency of your wash is paramount. Too thick, and it will obscure details and create unwanted stains. Too thin, and it will have little to no effect. Finding the 'sweet spot' requires experimentation, but a good starting point is a ratio of approximately 1 part paint to 2-3 parts medium (water, flow improver, or a dedicated wash medium). Using flow improver, in particular, helps the wash to flow evenly and prevents it from beading up on the surface. The type of paint used also impacts the consistency; inks, being highly pigmented and already quite fluid, often require less dilution than acrylic paints. Regularly testing the wash on a piece of scrap plastic or primed cardboard is crucial to ensure it behaves as expected before applying it to the miniature itself.
