Distinguishing Sunspins from Other Atmospheric Phenomena
Atmospheric optics can present a variety of beautiful phenomena. It’s easy to confuse a sunspin with related effects such as sun dogs, halos, or even simply glare. However, key differences exist that allow for accurate identification. Sun dogs, or parhelia, appear as bright spots of light to the left and right of the sun, created by refraction through horizontally oriented ice crystals. Halos, on the other hand, are circular rings of light surrounding the sun or moon, resulting from refraction through randomly oriented ice crystals.
