As a child, the youngster was jokingly nicknamed Vozinha (‘Little Granny’) by other kids, because of the key role his grandparents played in raising him – his father was away in the military by that point, and his mother was often working to provide for the family.

After starting his club career in his native land, he had spells in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia, before eventually arriving at Chaves in 2024, for a second stint in Portugal. Already 38 and competing in the second tier, his career seemed to be winding down to an unremarkable end before Cape Verde qualified for the World Cup for the first time in their history.
