Joey McGuire Fires Back at Steve Sarkisian, Setting the Stage for a High-Stakes Texas Showdown in CFP
By bolting to the Southeastern Conference in 2024, Texas reunited with past nemesis Texas A&M. The storied programs went more than 12 seasons without playing one another until both became official SEC rivals. The Longhorns and Aggies played one another from 1894 to 2011 regardless of conference affiliation. But A&M’s departure to the SEC in 2012 ended the annual rivalry with the Longhorns, as Texas stayed in the Big 12 during that period.
TTU and Texas, meanwhile, haven’t played each other since 2023 which ended in a 57-7 Longhorns rout. That was also during the final Big 12 season for Texas before its SEC move. The Longhorns own a 55-18 overall record in that series. But now it’s TTU that enters the ’26 season fresh off landing in the 12-team playoffs over Texas.
