Skydiver’s Unexpected Crash at Lane Stadium Shakes Up Virginia Tech’s Spring Football Debut with James Franklin
The incident postponed the start of the Hokies’ final spring scrimmage, which drew a record crowd at Lane Stadium. Once things settled down, play resumed as normal, with the Maroon squad defeating the White team 30-21.
The event was Franklin’s first public appearance leading the program after being hired in November 2025. He previously spent over 11 seasons at Penn State, where he led the program to six double-digit-win seasons and a College Football Playoff semifinal. Franklin takes over a Virginia Tech program that went 3-9 in 2025 and has not reached eight wins in any season since 2019.
