Texas HC Steve Sarkisian Issues Cryptic Warning to Arch Manning: Is Relying on Speed a Dangerous Trap?
The top-ranked University of Texas Longhorns pulled away for a 30-6 victory over the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners on Saturday night, but head coach Steve Sarkisian left the field with a clear teaching point for his starting quarterback. While Texas improved to 3-0 ahead of its Southeastern Conference opener, sophomore quarterback Arch Manning delivered a somewhat chaotic performance that prompted an insightful postgame critique from his head coach.
Manning struggled to lock into a steady rhythm in the passing attack at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, completing 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards. Instead of staying patient through his reads, the signal-caller frequently used his athletic speed to escape pocket pressure. He finished the night with nine carries for nearly 70 gross rushing yards, opting to scramble whenever defenders blanketed his initial options.
Addressing his play after the game, Sarkisian explained how quick scrambling habits can ruin a passer’s progression timing.
