Texas Tech Coach Joey McGuire Unleashes Shocking Truth About NIL Spending That Could Change College Sports Forever

It has been a busy offseason for Texas Tech football. Texas Tech made the playoffs in 2025 and then retooled for 2026. Part of the retooling was bringing in Brendan Sorsby, but the quarterback never saw a snap with the team, as he was deemed ineligible due to a gambling scandal. Despite the loss of their starting quarterback. Texas Tech is expected to still contend for a playoff spot.

Now, Joey McGuire is opening up about his program, discussing NIL in the process, per Pete Nakos of On3.

“I don’t know the exact number, but I know we’re not the number one team in the country payroll-wise, and we weren’t last year either,” McGuire told On3. “And we’re not the number two. There are teams spending way more than us that didn’t win a national championship last year. So whenever you look at it, my focus is that I know what we’re doing and how we’re using our resources. And the last thing — people are saying, ‘You’ve got a target on your back, man.’ I just keep going back to the Oregon game. We’re hunting because the last thing we have, the reminder we have, is us getting our butts kicked and getting shut out. So we’re hunting to play better in moments like that. We focus on that versus focusing on anything else.”
