The Silent Game-Changers: Four NBA Free Agents Poised to Redefine the Next Title Race

Influential trades have been occurring this offseason. Now it’s time for free agents to impact the direction of the 2026-27 NBA season. Here are four to keep a close eye on, ranging from a bench contributor to one of the greatest players in league history.

With little fanfare last offseason, the New York Knicks signed free agent Landry Shamet – the hero of Game 1 of this year’s Eastern Conference finals – to a non-guaranteed one-year deal.

Would the Knicks have won the NBA Finals without Shamet? Who’s to say? But it’s clear his ability to be a positive on both sides of the ball, especially when Josh Hart was struggling to make an impact on offense, was a huge boost for them during their championship run.

Why do we bring this up? While NBA free agency no longer includes the biggest fish in the pond – teams typically trade stars before they lose them for nothing – there are still pieces that can, in the right context, change the trajectory of an entire season.

Following are four unrestricted free agents this offseason who could have that sort of effect on the 2026-27 season.

Beginning at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday, NBA free agents and teams can ne‌‌gotia‌t‌e contract terms and re‌a‌c‌h verb‌al agre‌ements, but signings can’t occur until 12:01 p.m. ET July 6.

1. Norman Powell

Norman Powell may have been selected to his first All-Star team last season, but he isn’t a true “star.” He ranked 191st of 582 players in DRIP, which projects a player’s contribution to a team’s plus/minus per 100 possessions.

Still, Powell has an explosive quality to his game. Most nights, the 6-foot-4 combo guard is just a really good offensive player. But sometimes, he can get on these out-of-body heaters that allow him to go blow-for-blow with the best in the business.

We saw this phenomenon play out the last time Powell was in the NBA playoffs in 2025. He had four games scoring under 13 points but also three games with 20 or more. In those three games, the Los Angeles Clippers held a margin of victory of 12.7 points per game (they won two of those three games, by the way).

There’s growing concern the Miami Heat – the team Powell suited up for last season – won’t have the means to field a competitive offer to retain the veteran. If that happens, a handful of other teams will have their shot at landing him.

The Detroit Pistons have emerged as a team that could go after Powell. Could you imagine the kind of damage he could do, attacking off the advantages created by Cade Cunningham? It may be enough to help them finish what they started last season.

2. Quentin Grimes

After a summer saga that led to him taking a one-year qualifying offer with the Philadelphia 76ers last year, Quentin Grimes is finally an unrestricted free agent.

Grimes has had an interesting career arc for being in the league only five years. He started out as an intriguing 3-and-D ace, then injuries and inconsistent performances led to him getting moved around like a traveling salesman. Finally, he landed in Philadelphia and showed off a level of offensive aggression that transcended his previous label – only for him to not get a long-term extension and spend last season as one of the more productive bench players in the league (12th in bench points scored with 688; eighth in PPG for players with 55+ games off the bench).

On this list of free agents, Grimes is the most similar to Shamet. He can catch fire from 3-point range (career 36.6% shooter on 5.2 attempts per game), attack closeouts when defenses overplay his jumper (70th percentile rim field goal percentage) and defend at the point of attack.

Grimes isn’t getting a ton of buzz right now as teams take a stab at some of the bigger NBA free agents. But at 26, he’s exactly what every contending team should be aspiring to acquire: young, versatile and athletic.

3. LeBron James

We couldn’t make an NBA free agents list like this without including LeBron James. The league’s all-time leader in games played and scoring is no longer among the best players in the world (22nd in DRIP), which makes his ball-dominant tendencies harder to build around. However, he helped the shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers to a playoff upset of the Houston Rockets in the first round.

LeBron’s IQ, strength, passing and playoff experience can help a team that’s struggling to get over the hump reach the next level. Plus, with The King gearing up for his 24th season – which would build on another of his NBA records – he won’t be looking for a max/near-max level deal. This means front offices don’t need to tank the rest of their roster or feel obligated to play him a lot when it doesn’t make sense.

A reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers, with whom his NBA career began and later won the 2015-16 league championship during his second stint with the franchise, would require LeBron to accept a veteran minimum salary under their cap scenario.

4. Dean Wade

Dean Wade does things that help teams win games. This postseason, no Cavaliers player boasted a higher on-off rating than Wade, as the team was 16.3 points per 100 possessions better with the 6-9 power forward on the floor than out of the game.

Wade is a powerhouse whose force gives a team the positional physicality it needs to survive in the current postseason climate, while also wielding the type of nimble footwork that enables him to slide with quicker guards (he drew acclaim for defending Knicks star Jalen Brunson during the regular season).

Wade isn’t a particularly strong offensive player. He’s a hesitant shooter (averaging just 3.3 attempts per game) and doesn’t like to do much exploration off the dribble (ninth percentile unassisted field-goal rate). But keep in mind the Cavaliers still won Wade’s minutes despite him often being in a poor offensive environment (playing alongside two bigs who can’t really space the floor).

Imagine the kind of impact he can make if he signs in NBA free agency with a team that has more spacing and creation around him.
