Rom, a lovable Ferengi doofus, is particularly terrible at baseball, and Sisko boots him from the squad. Eventually, Sisko remembers that playing a game with your friends is supposed to be fun after Rom’s nookie-girl wife convinces Sisko he’s being a tool and gets Rom back on the team. We get a little Sandlot in space, except the Vulcans still win in a blowout because they are perfectly logical superhumans. Rom does, however, accidentally lay down a bunt that brings home the crew’s only run.

The actor who played Rom, Max Grodénchik, was actually an accomplished baseball player—and reportedly the best player in the cast. Which created a problem: he had trouble making himself look as hopeless as Rom was supposed to be.

Apparently, there are limits to acting. To achieve the necessary level of baseball incompetence, Grodénchik ended up throwing and batting left-handed.

So that’s all I’ve got today: Mark Teixeira and a possibly offensive Jewish caricature who’s laughably bad at baseball but comes up big in the clutch anyway.
