As initial planning begins for the 2030 World Cup cycle, Scaloni remains “Plan A, B, and C” for Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia.

Following a heartbreaking loss in the 2026 World Cup final, Scaloni cast doubt on his continuation during an emotional press conference that he was forced to cut short after breaking down in tears. A broader roster overhaul looms for the Albiceleste, which featured one of the oldest squads in the tournament, and the AFA remains determined to have Scaloni direct that transition.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Tapia expressed his unwavering desire for Scaloni to spearhead the next cycle: “Without a doubt, I want him to stay, we all want him to stay. We have spoken, and he has even expressed it himself as well, that the conversations were very advanced. I am a grateful guy, and that’s why I think we have to let him meditate, make the right decision, and we have to respect it.“

Tapia emphasized that he would give the manager full autonomy to evaluate his future without added pressure. “I can’t keep the ‘Gringo’ (Scaloni) chained up if he feels he doesn’t have the desire or doesn’t have a better projection. I want him to be well, and we should all want the same, even if it hurts us,” Tapia added.

With Scaloni’s contract expiring in December 2026, the AFA is eager to secure the manager’s long-term future. However, when pressed on whether the federation had prepared a backup option in the event of his departure, Tapia delivered a direct answer: “No, my Plan A, B, and C is Scaloni.“

According to TyC Sports journalist Rodolfo Cingolani, who conducted the interview with Tapia, he was told in an off-the-record conversation that Scaloni’s wife strongly supports his continuation at the helm. Based in Mallorca, Spain, with their family, Elisa Montero reportedly encourages him to remain in the position, believing the joy the Albiceleste brings him, paired with his trusted coaching staff, makes staying on the bench the right path forward.
