It’s always seemed strange that FIFA is willing to use the World Cup as a guinea pig for changes to the Laws of the Game.
Football’s premier competition is jealously guarded, more and more so as the governing body’s own logo has been afforded the limelight, and yet every major experiment and tweak is live-tested at the sport’s apex.
Strange, maybe, but surely an indication of the paradoxically low regard FIFA’s top suits have for their own golden globe.
FIFA’s is the leading voice within IFAB, the game’s law-making body. Implementing new laws and updates at the World Cup is a choice.
They don’t all come into play at football’s global showpiece. That honour is saved for the aspects of the Laws of the Game through which FIFA wants to make a statement on a theme.
