Martinez out from Aston Villa’s previous games
Amid swirling speculation over a potential exit, the Argentine goalkeeper has yet to feature for Aston Villa since returning to the squad, fueling further questions about his long-term future at the club.
Martinez was absent for Villa’s 2-1 defeat to PSG in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup on August 12, and was also left out of the matchday squad for the pre-season friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which Villa also lost 2-1. Marco Bizot started in goal in both matches.
However, according to manager Unai Emery, the decision to leave Martinez out has nothing to do with other matters — it’s purely about rest. The goalkeeper wrapped up his 2026 World Cup campaign with Argentina on July 19, and the Spanish coach has since granted him an extended break.
