Notre Dame’s Championship Quest Fueled by Heartfelt Tribute to Lou Holtz—What’s Driving the Team Beyond the Field?
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have championship aspirations in 2026. The last time Notre Dame won a national championship was in 1988, when Lou Holtz was the head coach. Holtz passed away in March at the age of 89.
As the 2026 team looks to win a title this year, they are honoring the legendary former coach.

The helmets for the Irish will have stickers with the word “Lou” on them.
Holtz began his coaching career in 1960 as an assistant at Iowa. He would go on to be an assistant at William and Mary, Connecticut, South Carolina, and Ohio State. In 1969, he got his first head coaching job, taking over at William and Mary. He spent three years there before moving to NC State from 1972 through 1975, bringing them to bowl games every season.
