Notre Dame’s Championship Quest Fueled by Heartfelt Tribute to Lou Holtz—What’s Driving the Team Beyond the Field?
The work at NC State earned him the job with the New York Jets. After a 3-10 season in 1976, Holtz returned to the college ranks at Arkansas. Holtz was let go at the end of the 1983 season. He spent two years at Minnesota before taking over a Notre Dame team that had been struggling under Gerry Faust. In his third year, Holtz had fully turned around the team. After a 5-6 season in his first year, Holtz brought them to a title in 1988. He went 100-30-2 in his time at Notre Dame before retiring. Notre Dame finished five seasons ranked inside the top seven in the final AP Poll.
