Virginia Tech’s Whit Babcock Abruptly Retires Days After Controversial James Franklin Hire—What Really Happened?
The 2026 college football season will begin an entirely new era for Virginia Tech, with Athletic Director Whit Babcock stepping down from his position just months after hiring James Franklin.
Babocock, 55, announced his retirement after 12 years on the job, Virginia Tech announced on Thursday. However, he will remain with the Hokies’ athletic department in an advisory role.
For 12 years, Whit Babcock led Virginia Tech Athletics with purpose, pride and a deep care for the people who make this place special.
Today, he announced his retirement as Director of Athletics, effective June 30, 2026.
