Virginia Tech’s Whit Babcock Abruptly Retires Days After Controversial James Franklin Hire—What Really Happened?

In the same announcement, Franklin thanked Babcock for bringing him on board as one of his final actions.

Babcock steps down after a whirlwind 2025-2026 athletic season, which included him firing head football coach Brent Pry and subsequently hiring Franklin. He nearly dealt with another coaching search, with head basketball coach Mike Young struggling through another losing season, but the Hokies announced that their seven-year leader will return for at least one more year.
