Ex-South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia Faces Life-Threatening Battle: A Cancer Diagnosis That Shocks Fans and Raises Urgent Questions
Garcia began chemotherapy treatment Wednesday, according to the fundraiser. His medical team is using FOLFIRINOX, described as the most aggressive treatment option available for his condition. After the initial chemotherapy rounds, Garcia is expected to meet with specialized liver and colon surgeons to determine the next phase of treatment.
Garcia played at South Carolina from 2007-11 under legendary head coach Steve Spurrier and helped lead the program to one of the most successful stretches in school history. During the 2010 season, he guided the Gamecocks to their only SEC Championship Game appearance, finishing with 3,059 passing yards, 20 touchdown passes, and a career-best 64.2% completion rate. South Carolina finished 9-5 that season and and made history by defeating No. 1 Alabama 35-21 for the program’s first win against a top-ranked team. Garcia completed 17 of 20 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns in that game.
