Legendary HBCU Broadcaster Charlie Neal’s Untold Story Emerges Following His Passing
Legendary HBCU sports broadcaster Charlie Neal has passed away at the age of 80. The news was first reported by HBCU Gameday, who wrote an article in tribute to Neal and his impact on HBCU media.
Neal’s career spanned over 40 years as he covered HBCU sports in a variety of venues, most notably BET Sports. He joined BET at the inception of the channel under the direction of Bob Johnson. The upstart cable channel, aimed at Black viewers, routinely aired HBCU sporting events. Neal was the play-by-play commentator on BET’s first HBCU football game between Delaware State and South Carolina State in 1980
