Legendary HBCU Broadcaster Charlie Neal’s Untold Story Emerges Following His Passing
In a 2020 feature for The Ringer, James Verrett, a frequent HBCU play-by-play commentator for ESPN+, likened Neal to some of the best sports broadcasters in history.
“Charlie Neal, during the heyday of Black college sports on television, was our Al Michaels…He was our Howard Cosell.”
Following BET’s departure from airing Black college sports in 2004, Neal worked for outlets such as ESPNU and CBS Sports, before working later in his career with the Byron Allen-owned, HBCU-based media outlet, HBCU Go. Neal was the lead announcer for HBCU Go’s football and basketball games.
