The Legendary Pat White’s Jersey Retirement: What This Means for West Virginia’s Football Future

The best run of success in the history of West Virginia football came from 2005 through 2007. In those three years, the team went 33-5, finished in the top ten all three years, won two conference titles, and won both a Sugar Bowl and a Fiesta Bowl. Those teams were coached by Rich Rodriguez. Before the 2025 season, Rodriguez was hired to return to West Virginia as the head coach.

Now, West Virginia will be celebrating a key aspect of those teams, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.

“The University of West Virginia announced it will retire the No. 5 jersey of former QB Pat White later this summer,” Meirov posted on X, formerly Twitter.
