Toews became the best version of himself in Colorado, but he still showed a ton of promise on Long Island. He may not have been a prolific scorer with the Islanders — that just isn’t his game — but he was a puck-moving presence, with a strong defensive acumen. The team may have been in a cap crunch at the time, but 1) his contract ended up being reasonable and 2) that wasn’t the player to make a casualty.
