Can Records Survive the NHL’s Grueling 84-Game Marathon?
The NHL’s return to an 84-game schedule gives players two more opportunities to chase milestones and challenge single-season records. Connor McDavid has already made the expanded calendar relevant, producing 40 points through Edmonton’s first 16 games of the 2026–2027 season.
That puts McDavid on a 210-point pace, within reach of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL-record 215. The extra games help, but the distinction matters: McDavid’s production rate, availability, and remaining schedule will determine whether an early surge becomes a sustained record pursuit.
