Can Records Survive the NHL’s Grueling 84-Game Marathon?

As NHLRumors.com reported before opening night, the expanded schedule follows the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. The additional contests come against divisional opponents, with each team receiving one extra home game and one extra road game.

This is the NHL’s third 84-game season. The league previously used that length in 1992–1993 and 1993–1994, when the schedule included neutral-site games.

The statistical effect depends on a player’s scoring rate. A player averaging one point per game gains two projected points over a full schedule. Someone averaging two points gains four.
