Can Records Survive the NHL’s Grueling 84-Game Marathon?

At his current rate, McDavid projects to 205 points over 82 games and 210 over 84. The expanded schedule therefore adds five projected points, provided he maintains that average and plays every game.

To reach 200, he needs another 160 points over Edmonton’s remaining 68 games, approximately 2.35 per appearance. Breaking Gretzky’s record requires 176 more points, approximately 2.59 per game.

Gretzky recorded 215 points in 80 games during 1985–1986, averaging approximately 2.69. A new total record over 84 games would not necessarily surpass that scoring rate.
